                       2nd November 2008

At the Fernhill Heath Club Worcester

Books by Iain Abernethy

(Signed copies of all Iain's books are available at no extra charge)

Iain Abernethy is one of the UK's leading exponents of applied karate and kata application (bunkai). His martial arts DVDs and books have sold worldwide and have been translated into other languages. Iain holds a 5th Dan with both the British Combat Association (awarded by Peter Consterdine 8th Dan and Geoff Thompson 6th Dan) and the EKGB (awarded by Doug James 7th Dan).

Iain is in great demand on the seminar circuit and teaches many seminars on his approach to practical karate both here in the UK and overseas. The bunkai that Iain teaches are not prearranged karateka vs. karateka applications. Nor are they static, complex, elaborate or reliant upon finite movement. Iain's approach to karate makes kata application practical, simple, direct and accessible to all.

At the end of the Seminar i will be taking a group photo, every student will recieve a framed copy of the photgraph my way of thanking you for attending a seminar by in my opinion the Worlds Leading exponent of applied Karate and Kata application (Bunkai)

letters will be going home within the next two weeks, please fill in the reply slip and return ASAP so that Certificates can be ordered, dont forget that Sensei Abernethy always brings his Books and DVD`s with him to sell at the end of every seminar, please see below at the amazing Kata Application (Bunkai) books Sensei Abernethy has written.

Bunkai-Jutsu:

The Practical Application of Karate Kata

‘Bunkai-Jutsu’ is the analysis of the karate katas and their application in real combat. It is also the title of this pioneering book by Iain Abernethy. The fighting applications of the karate katas (forms) is one of the most fascinating – and sadly misunderstood – aspects of karate practice. Bunkai-Jutsu provides the reader with the information they need to unlock the ‘secrets’ of kata and to begin practising karate as the complete and realistic combat art that it was intended to be! This groundbreaking and often controversial book provides a detailed analysis of the combative concepts and principles upon which the katas are based. This book is essential reading for all those who want to understand the real meaning of kata.

Mental Strength:

Condition your Mind, Achieve your Goals

Many people have dreams they would like to realise and aspects of their lives they would like to change. However, relatively few people have the mental strength needed to break outside their comfort zone and take the steps required to change their lot in life and make their dreams a reality. This book explains how to develop a mind strong enough to push past all obstacles so that nothing will be able to stand between you and your goals. Mental Strength gives clear, encouraging guidance on how to develop a strong and powerful mind, grow your talents, become the person you want to be, and live the life you want to live.

Karate’s Grappling Methods

This heavily illustrated book provides instruction on the grappling methods recorded within the karate katas and shows how these techniques – and the principles upon which they rest – can be applied in a real situation. The information contained within this book will enable you to practice Karate as the effective and complete art that its founders intended it to be.

Throws for Strikers: The Forgotten Throws of Karate, Boxing & Taekwondo

Many martial artists are now critically re-evaluating the effectiveness of their chosen art. As a result, it is now more widely understood that to be a truly effective martial artist, you need to be competent at all ranges of fighting. Practitioners of striking systems need to be sure that they know what to do at close-range in case their strikes don’t end the fight. The need for these basic grappling skills was fully understood by the martial artists and boxers of the past. It is only in comparatively recent times – due to the martial arts changing their focus from self-defence to sport and physical-development – that the striking arts have neglected the close-range techniques covered in this book.

Arm-Locks for All Styles

'Arm-Locks for All Styles' is a must read for all martial artists who wish to expand, enhance and develop their knowledge of arm-locks. In addition to providing step-by-step instruction on over fifty-five arm-locks, this heavily illustrated and comprehensive book also includes detailed discussions on the use of arm-locks in live situations, the underlying core principles of all arm-locks, and how to uncover the arm-locks 'hidden' within the katas, hyungs and forms. 'Arm-Locks for All Styles' covers locks that can be used whilst fighting vertically and on the ground and is a must for all martial artists who understand the need for skills at all ranges of combat.

Sunday the 8th June 08

Self Defence Course

Last sunday OKKO Karate Jutsu open its doors for a self defence course named Minimum Effort Maximum Effect, 4 hours of quick effective techniques to more than handle the common street urchin hell bent on doing you harm.

The Karate-Ka present, enjoyed a good 4 hour session where they got to experiment with new techniques, that are readliy available within any good Karate Syllabus, its just the case of unlocking and understanding the best possible approach to these somewhat strange moves.

I`d just like to thank everyone who attended on the day for making a great session, Special thanks must also be said to the following 2 people, Sensei Dave Rowley and Sempai Craig Harker my two assistants, who took a lot of punishment on the day in the pursuit of Self Defence.

Im not going to write stacks and stacks now on the seminar itself and what it involved i`d just like to write now about the work that goes on prior to one of these events.

Obviously the material must be good, it must also be in some kind of order and with every technique having an explaination and also answers to any questions that may be asked, timescales must be right, if a 4 hour seminar is planned then there must be enough content to cover the time period, nothing worse than attending a seminar for 4 hours only to find that the seminar Instructor only has enough info for 3 hours, this leaves a void in the seminar /course, im thankful that mine didnt, it was perfectly timed, with more than enough techniques and time to play in partners plus drinks and other little breaks. But again that was something i had to make sure was perfect on the day, other people helped make this possible also, So id like to thank the following people My wife Sarah who listened to me constantly and helped me when it was needed and also Mrs Sandra Rowley, OKKO`S Chief Medic and First Aider, who sat at the seminar for the 2 hours of the Childrens Course and the 4 hours of the adults Seminar just to ensure everything was safe, from applying BooBoo`s to scratches to asking students to make sure their Gi`s were not too long that they could fall on them and hurt themselves, In addition to this Sandy also made Tea and Coffee all day and also acted as our film crew, taking every opportunity to film either myself demonstrating or the Karate-Ka present demonstrating their new found skills.

So Thankyou to everyone who helped me put this one on.

Nigel Lee goes for 3rd Dan

March 26th 2007

On Sunday the 26th of March 2006, 5 of OKKO`s senior Adult Black Belts attended Sensei Iain Abernethy`s Seminar held in Swindon at Sensei Andi Kidds Shotokan Dojo, Before another thought provoking and very tireing Seminar, Chief Instructor Nigel Lee was to be called into the Dojo to go through his 3rd Dan Black Belt Grading Examination under Sensei Iain Abernethy 5th Dan BCA & Karate England.  On entering the Dojo Nigel was asked to stand in the centre of the hall and Bow to Sensei Iain before commencing his extremely demanding 3rd Dan Grading.

To start the grading off Nige had to go through the entire Kihon Waza or Basic Techniques as set out in the 3rd Dan syllabus, this was done in front of not only sensei Iain but also a number of other Black Belts who had attended to watch over the grading and lend support, after going all the way through the Syllabus it was time to begin the kata`s, (a very nervous Nigel ) began to perform the katas set out in the Wado-Ryu 3rd Dan syllabus, this was followed by the Bunkai section, Bunkai being the application of Kata, Sensei Nige had to demonstrate one technique plus a follow up counter to every Kata performed, this again was also followed by a complete demonstration of the Bunkai to the kata Nai-Hanchi, sensei Iain was extremely impressed with Nige`s analyzis of the kata Nai-Hanchi and thought it good enough to actually take a seminar on, after graciously been given a quick 2 minute breather, and it was 2 minutes, it was time to show the Self-Protection side, firstly having to defend against one attacker throwing realistic strikes then multiple attackers, which Sensei Nige dealt with accordingly, after the multiple attacks it was on to the weapons defence, Nige had to defend himself competently against a Baseball bat, a knife, and a broken Bottle, again passing this section with flying colours, the last part of the 3rd Dan Grading was to fight, this started out with one on one against a black belt and as soon as the word was given another jumped straight in and so on and so forth until the last fight was against Sensei Nige (5ft 5" weighing in at 8 1/2 stone) versus Sensei Steve Whyte, (6ft 2" weighing in at 15-16 stone mark) not a lot of difference, a cracking fight began with both fighters landing big heavy shots to the vulnerable attacking areas, and also resulted in sensei Nige being sweeped off his feet and bashing his head off a very hard floor, not one to let a little pain and a huge lump stop him, the fight coninued until Sensei Iain Abernethy called Yame!, Phew!!! its over, after a 10 minute rest and much needed water, sensei Nige was called in to speak to Sensei Iain with regards to the grading results, after some fantastic Feedback Sensei Ian Signed the 3rd Dan British Combat Association Certificate and Grading Licence and congratulated me on passing my 3rd Dan.

I would like to thank the following people for there help.

Okko Black Belts; Dave Rowley 2nd Dan, Ian Glasper 1st Dan, Mikey Edwards 2nd Dan and Tommy Edwards 1st Dan, for all there help in my training prior to my grading and for attending my grading to help out and support me, Cheers Guys.

I`d also like to thank Sensei Iain Abernethy for Grading me (and passing me) and for allowing me to showcase sensei Malc`s kata creation Kimyou Seishin. Massive thankyou and huge respect.

I`d like to thank Sensei Andi Kidd for opening up his Dojo very early for me to have my grading, i couldnt of done it without his help.

Sensei Steve (the big Scottish guy) for knocking seven shades out of me on my grading, and also for the great support you gave me on the day.

and for there words of encouragement and help i`d like to thank Sensei Danny Corr ZKJ and Eric Forsythe Mushin Karate, for giving me the mental strength needed to endure my grading.

Last but never least i`d like to thank my friend Sensei Malcolm McClure, although no longer with us in person your spirit was felt on every technique, and with this i dedicate my 3rd Dan BCA Black Belt to Malcolm McClure, the most talented person i have ever known.
